29. Sep 2009, abendsOur Tuscany trip

The destination for our summer vacation 2009 was Lajatico in Tuscany, Italy. We have been there two times before, and also the third time we liked it very much! It was great for us three to relax, spent time together and forget about time, work and other daily duties. During the weekends we were four as Christianes sister Ulrike visited us. She is currently living in Florence and was happy to see her nice again. As everybody knows the “typical” pictures of beautiful Tuscany, we selected only a few personal ones. Enjoy!

30. Mar 2009, spaet abendsOur first family-holiday

The first holiday with Nadja. Okay, we had two long weekends with her and our friends at Whitsun and New Year’s Eve. However, this was the first long holiday as a family. After some research we followed a recommendation of Tom finally: the Familotel (family hotel) “Rookhus” at the “Great Labus Lake” near Wesenberg, located in the Mueritz National Park.

Although the  weather was not the best – nearly 0°C, stormy, rainy, even snowy days with only few hours of sun – we really enjoyed the time. As the saying goes: There is no bad weather, only wrong clothing. Still, a little more sun would have been great. However, the hotel offered indoor playgrounds so we were not stuck in the room only. In general the “Familotel” was well prepared for children, even the little ones. Our “Babyroom” was a spacious double room with a seperate chamber which featured a baby bed and a diaper changing table. So we could bring Nadja to bed and stay in the hotel room without disturbing her sleep. Very friendly and helpful was the staff who was used to handle the children well. And if you wounder how “romantic hotel” and “family hotel” go together… yes, it sounds like antipodes, but it worked fine. How? Find out yourself – with or without kids :-)

A small addition to our skiing weekend: Yes, the ski pistes were enjoyable empty and the snow was simply fantastic!

23. Jan 2009, kurz vorm Feierabend Snow

(published via WordPress for iPhone)

As this post was published via the iPhone I could not deliver the English version until today. I am sorry for any inconvinience :-)

6 am wake up in Berlin, at noon on the ski slope already. That is a completely new experience for a guy from Berlin. And a nice one – thanks to cheap airlines like transavia! Berlin-Tegel airport to Innsbruck airport only 1 hour flight time. All right, somehow we “missed” the 9+ hours in the car to get “prepared” for the ski holiday. But as soon as we were wearing ski clothes and shoes and pressed the skipass to the sensor of the ski lift we realized “Yes, it’s skiing time!”

Another interesting insight I had: How do you realize you do to much business trips? When arriving at the airport I felt like “work” – for most other travellers the airport is a symbol for “holidays”.

16. Nov 2008, spaet abendsA luxury weekend

That was a great weekend! Of course we missed Nadja, but knowing that her Grandparents taking care for her gave us the opportunity to enjoy again the hospitality of the Hotel Haferland. A wounderful hotel, family owned with warm hearts. Lovely designed, with nice wellness area, friendly “Haferland ghosts” (the employees) and good food. Excellent food, to be honest. Breakfast as well as dinner menu. Mostly regional recipes, the ingredients from the area, produced organically and prepared very artfully. To cut it short: A perfect weekend to take a deep breath. Well, the bill is nearly as high as for one week holiday in Turkey – only that the weekend at the Haferland provides us more recovery ;-)

26. Sep 2008, kurz vorm FeierabendCrash test dummy

20080923_renaultmeganecrash.jpg

So, this was my “crash-free” driving history. After some smaller (rear-end) collisions in my wilder times as a young guy ;-) I managed to stay crash-free for several years. Until last Thursday, 23rd September. Then it hit me. Well, this time I was unblameable. I was just returning from the Kindergarten where I left Nadja. I was driving on side streets when somebody took my right of way. He simply misjudged the braking power on wet cobbled roads – or was simply sleeping.

It was an OPEL Astra stationwagon. Quite new. From Hoyerswerda, a small city in the region of Brandenburg Saxonia with not the best reputation. A petty bourgeois’ car at its best. Did I mentioned that I hate OPEL? And in most cases does not like Opel drivers? Then the surprise: The driver was mid-twenty, maybe nearly thirty, not older. Wearing a mohawk haircut and a bit “anarchic-styled” clothes. The solution: he has been driving his parents (in their car) to the Berlin airport where they were departure for their two-week-holidays. And this guy was already very close to home, he told me that he usually drives another street which he missed that morning. Well, another evidence for the “sleeping theory”.

To cut a long story short, here are the results: He is guilty, has to pay a high fine, the car (company car) got damaged for around 9.500 EUR (which means “beyond repair” based on economic calculation of the leasing company), I suffered from a whiplash injury and my wife and me spent a lot of time to handle all crash-related issues. Well, and as special bonus guess which car I got from car rental as replacement? RIGHT: An OPEL ASTRA station wagon. And yes, after driving it myself for some days I still hate Opel… ;-)

Autounfall am Prager Airport [singlepic id="402" w="160" h="120" mode="web20" float="left" ] Autounfall am Prager Airport Zoom

…but true. I always thought that this kind of pictures can only be found in Fun-Emails, mostly received from (former) colleagues (a big THANK YOU here to Maik ;-) ) or friends. But this photo was taken by myself, just this wednesday at around 10 a.m. in front of the Airport in Prague (Czech Republic). It looked like the driver ignored the barrier which allows only one car per lift to enter the underground garage. So she (yes, sorry, it was indeed a female driver) was stopped by the hidden-in-the-street, automatic barrier which come out and lifted her brand new Audi. When I was spotting this, a bunch of people (Police, Security, Airport men) were running around without having an idea what to do. It was a pity that I had to leave before it was solved… ;-)
