Sometimes old things have their own special appeal: They are interesting again because the fashion style repeats. Or they are made in a way which is called “time-less design”. Or they are simply that old they just became “classics”.

The wardrobe my late grandpa had in his storage closet reached there this latest named status. At least in our point of view so when we had to clear the flat we decided to keep that cabinet for us. As our own move in the new flat was soon to come the wardrobe was demounted and stored in our cellar. When we moved it was transported to the new flat and the pieces were put in the corner of our corridor where it should stand later. And was left there. For half a year.

Why? Well, basically the mounting should have been very easy based on the good old quality style design (no nails or screws needed – something IKEA could learn from!). Only that my grandpa had “repaired” or “stabilized” the cabinet sometime in the last 80 years with some nails. Which my father did not know. So when he tried to disassemble it he accidentally broke the baseplate because he could not remove it as expected.

Being East-German we have a specail “repair and construction gene”. So it was not a question of “IF” or “HOW” to repair, only “WHEN”. Finally, yesterday was the day. Using the little more time I have during my 4 week “maturity leave” I headed to my favourite DIY-store HORNBACH early in the morning. I started at lunch time with big support of my dad (he disassembled it – he assemble it!). Although we had to work under hard conditions (we could not use a hammer or make any other loud noise as Nadja had her after-lunch nap) we finished it after soon. Now Grandpa’s wardrobe is the new “star” or highlight of our corridor.
